Why autumn is the smartest time to book a solo retreat

Everyone books summer, so summer is where the crowds, the heat and the peak prices are. The people who travel well book the shoulder: the few weeks either side of high season when a destination is still warm but the coaches have gone home. For a solo traveller in particular, autumn is the sweet spot, and right now is when those rooms are being taken.

The maths is simple. In September and October the Mediterranean sea is warmer than it is in June, because water holds the summer heat long after the air has cooled. Portugal, Greece, Spain and Morocco all sit in their best light of the year, days are still long enough for a morning swim and an evening walk, and midday is finally comfortable enough to actually move. You get the postcard without the sunburn or the queue.

For a solo booker there is a second, quieter advantage: availability. Single rooms are the first to sell in high season and the slowest to be released, so in July a solo traveller is often choosing from what couples left behind. In the shoulder season the pressure comes off. There is room to get the single room that is a real room, at a price that has stopped pretending demand is infinite.

Prices follow the same curve. Autumn is frequently the best value a good venue offers all year, which is exactly why the sharper operators quietly fill their October dates first.
